U-Select Catering Equipment Review Show, Episode 19: WMF 1500s Bean-to-Cup Machine

By Phil Scoble

WMF bean to cup machines are brilliantly engineered machines that will guarantee the quality of your coffee. Each machine has different specs, but all of them are dependable, hard wearing and simple to use too. The higher spec machines also have larger touchscreens and huge amounts of options for drinks. Overall, the WMF machines are top quality and well-worth a look if you are in the market for a bean-to-cup solution.

Good to Know

Six-week lead time for many models because they are made to order

Bean to Cup machines are becoming more and more popular – especially for smaller businesses.

This is because the explosion of coffee culture over the last twenty years has left catering businesses that don’t focus on coffee as a main offer – pubs and cafes for example – under pressure to produce great coffee without the right equipment or training.

Because to produce great coffee from a traditional espresso machine you need to be trained – and that is a big investment if you don’t have the time or inclination to do that.

A bean to cup machine is the answer – it produces a consistent, good standard of coffee for your customers at the touch of a button.

WMF – German Engineering Excellence

WMF are a German brand who have 165 years of history behind them. They make a wide range of bean-to-cup machines that are becoming the backbone of many large chains – the National Trust use them, illustrating how well the machines are made. The company has high standards and offer maintenance packages that are very comprehensive.

All WMF machines are designed to be looked after easily. They can be taken apart by hand and easily clip back together once you’ve cleaned the components.  This machine can be plumbed directly into the water mains or can use an integral water tank, but we’d suggest getting them plumbed in if you are going to be using it in a commercial environment for ease of use.

As with all commercial appliances that use water, you MUST check if you are in a hard or medium water area and get water softening installed if you want the machine to last.

The systems running the machines also ensure you can’t ignore basic cleaning schedules – which is great for protecting the long-term health of the machine and ensuring it produces top quality drinks.

It’s important to point out that this machine will require a separate milk fridge to go alongside the order, as you would with any bean to cup machine,

The 1500s can produce up to 180 cups a day, has a fantastic touchscreen, and can display up to 48 individual drinks, all available at the touch of a button. It can also be used for merchandising too.

The machine can also have three hoppers if you wish, giving you the chance to offer normal, decaf and hot chocolate from the same machine. The machine can also do cold milk drinks thanks to WMF’s clever milk systems.

You can also easily change the strength and size of the drinks you are about to dispense, and pour two drinks at once!

The 1500s is hard-wearing, easy to care for and simple to use.

For the smallest cafes, producing up to 10 cups of coffee an hour, the 1100s is a fantastic machine, with lots of features that make this entry level machine feel premium.

The 1500s has more features, more flexibility and can make more than double the amount of drinks each day. For busy sites this could be perfect.
